Last year, I was asked by some former and term-limited local politicians to run, and I spent a week in Pierre this past legislative session seeing how it all works and came to a pretty simple conclusion: I can be useful, so I’m going to heed the call.
I’m running as an Independent in District 27, which covers the Pine Ridge Reservation, Badlands National Park, old-school cowboy towns like Interior and Wall, and my/America’s favorite roadside attraction, our beloved Wall Drug.
Service: This is the core of my campaign. I came to South Dakota in 2004 as a volunteer teacher (/coach/bus driver/everything else), and the old adage is true—you get back even more than you give. Over the last few months, me and a bunch of my former students have been out helping the tribe pumping out basements and fixing damaged homes from some flooding last month; fixing up pow-wow and rodeo grounds before big community events, mowing the tall grass from a public dam so people can fish, cleaning up the overgrown yard of an elder complex down the creek from my place in Wounded Knee, and a bunch of other projects. Your donations aren’t going to the usual places (consultants, advertising, etc.). The money is being spent right here in District 27, home to one of the poorest counties in America.
Help create more jobs and advance economic development for folks living in one of the poorest counties in America.
Last year alone, there were more than 500 bills introduced in South Dakota—that’s more than any candidate platform can handle. It all comes down to reading the bills, studying the issues, and making wise choices.
Have questions or suggestions? I would love to hear from you!
